Don't Worry...Be Happy!!

In 1988 when this song was popular, I was going through a very rough time emotionally. This song became my motto. I was so obsessed that I bought a big smiley-face t-shirt with the song title and earrings to match. Whenever I was feeling lonely and blue I would play this song (very loudly) on my stereo and sing and dance around in my apartment. Pretty soon I would start to feel better, although I'm sure my neighbor's probably thought I was crazy.

I no longer have the shirt or earrings, I guess I got rid of them when things started getting better in my life. A couple of years ago I found a cute Be Happy button, and I bought it without knowing what I was going to do with it. Today I watched Cool 2 Craft's live show and Candace made a lovely bracelet from her grandmother's vintage buttons. I have a lot of vintage buttons, but none of them would work for what I wanted to make, so I pulled out my "bright" button jar and came across my Be Happy button. My button has found a home at last and I again have something to wear if I ever feel the need to dance around the house again...lol.

Welcome to the Operation Write Home Stars and Stamps Bunny Hop!

This is my first time to participate in Operation Write Home's Stars and Stamps Bunny Hop. I'm a little nervous and excited all at the same time..lol.

First, I want to tell you about Operation Write Home (OWH). It is an awesome organization that supports our Armed Forces by sending them blank handmade greeting cards which they use to write home to family and friends. Where do they get these handmade greeting cards? Volunteer cardmakers all over the United States, and even other countries, make them and send them to one of OWH's shippers. All types of cardmakers participate, from beginning to advanced, and they can send only a few cards at a time or boxes full of them!! There are deadlines for certain holidays, but you can also send all-occasion cards at any time. Upcoming holiday deadlines are Easter - March 18th, and Mother’s Day - March 31st. Please check out the guidelines as well...some are very important for the safety of our heroes (i.e. no glitter).

If you live in the Shreveport/Bossier area, please consider joining me next Wednesday to make cards for OWH. This is something I want to do on a monthly basis, so if your up to the task and would like to participate please send me a note to scrappinheaven@yahoo.com. I figure there have to be a few military wives and families over at Barksdale AFB that would love to join in. So please help me spread the word :-)

Old Farmer's Advice

I know this is not craft-related, but I saw this on one of my friend's Facebook posts. I loved it because so much of it is true. Just wanted to share it with you...Enjoy!!

Old Farmer's Advice :

1. Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong.

2. Keep skunks and bankers at a distance.

3. Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.

4. A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor.

5. Words that soak into your ears are whispered...not yelled.

6. Meanness don't jes' happen overnight.

7. Forgive your enemies; it messes up their heads.

8. Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you.

9. It don't take a very big person to carry a grudge.

10. You cannot unsay a cruel word.

11. Every path has a few puddles.

12. When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty.

Why I joined Stampin' Up!

When we lived in Grand Junction, Colorado my favorite place to spend time was at our local scrapbook store. We hadn't lived there long when I found this little gem of a store called Scrapbook USA. I felt at home there because Teresa, the owner, was a fellow Southerner. I often felt out of place when I was around some of the locals, so it was wonderful to find someone I could talk to without having them mock my accent. I spent a lot of time in her store and signed up for most of the scrapbooking classes that were offered.

I was looking over the store calendar one day and noticed a card class was being offered. I almost didn't sign up because I was only interested in scrapbooking. Why make cards when I can buy them at the store right? Well, I thought...what the heck, I don't have anything to do anyway and I'll just take my scrapbook stuff with me and crop afterwards. After the class started and we started stamping our cards I was hooked! I still wasn't very interested in cards, but I thought to myself that this would look so cute on a scrapbook page. When the instructor, Ada Marie, asked if I would like to sign up for her newsletters and be notified of upcoming classes I agreed right away.

Soon after she invited me to her home for a stamp-a-stack. I had no idea what that was, but I was game if it involved stamping. When I got to her house there was a roomful of women and they all started talking to me like they had known me for years. I had so much fun that night and was shocked to see that 3 hours had gone by so quickly. It couldn't be over already, I'd just gotten there! I was totally and completely hooked and started attending every stamp-a-stack and technique class she offered.

When we found out my husband's job was transferring to Texas I was very sad but I was also excited because we would only be 5 hours away from our family. But oh how I hated leaving all of my new friends!

I told Ada Marie I wanted to sign up to become a demonstrator before we moved because I had made so many friends by coming to her classes. I figured it would be a great way for me to make new friends again once we moved. Getting a discount for products I was already purchasing was another great perk...lol.

I haven't regretted it since!

The reason I am telling you this story is because I have just joined Recruit Crew and one of our challenges in this group is to tell our Stamping Story to at least 3 people. This group is just one of the many wonderful training opportunities that Stampin' Up! provides for their demonstrators. I felt sort of lost when I first became a demo because my upline lived so far away. I quickly found that the demonstrator web portal gave me access to tons of training materials right at my fingertips. It is just another great reason to be a part of the Stampin' Up! family.

One of the many wonderful things about being a Stampin' Up! Independent demonstrator is the opportunity to earn a fabulous free trip every year. Demonstrators who earn the trip participate in fun activities, relax in luxury, and-of course-stamp! Achievers also get to mingle with other successful demonstrators, build new friendships, and share business and stamping ideas. But what makes this trip truly special is that any demonstrator can qualify! The trip is open to every single demonstrator who achieves certain levels of achievement and performance.

Past locations have included Bermuda, Hawaii, and Alaska...just to name a few. In 2012, the trip will be to........ Disney!!

Layout using Bleach technique

This is the layout I created with the patterned paper I made using the Bleach technique. This layout cost pennies to make...I used paper scraps from my stash, a couple of stickers, eyelets, heart paper clip and bling.

Rubber Stamping with Bleach

Bleaching is a fun way for beginners to try rubber stamping on their scrapbook projects with minimal investment. The bleaching effect will vary depending on the color and type of paper you use. This technique works best on darker paper, but you can still achieve a subtle effect with pastel papers. Experiment with different papers and colors and keep a swatch book for future reference.

Supplies

Household Bleach
Paper Towels
Flat bottomed container
Rubber Stamps
Solid Core Cardstock
Archival mist (if you are using your project in scrapbook)

Preparation & Safety
Cover work area with a protective cloth or paper. Wear clothing appropriate for working with bleach. Eye protection is suggested in case of spattering. If you have sensitive skin you may want to wear latex or rubber gloves. Make sure you work in a well ventilated area. Never work with bleach near an open flame. Bleach is toxic, therefore this technique is NOT SUITABLE for children.

Steps

1. Fold a paper towel into quarters and place in your container.

2. Soak paper towel with bleach, just enough to dampen (not sloshy).

3. Dab stamps onto paper towel and press on background paper.

4. Do not overload the stamp with bleach as this will result in blurred images.

Tips

Use bold stamps as bleach has a tendency to run a bit.
Try letter and phrase stamps to make backgrounds that match the theme of your layout.
Use solid core cardstock that is the same color all the way through the paper (do not use papers with a white back or core).
Test on a scrap of the paper you want to use to see how it reacts to the bleach.
Do not allow bleached areas to come in contact with your photos until it has dried completely and treated with an archival mist.
Bleached images can be painted, colored with chalks or finished in the same way as any other image.
If you dilute the bleach you will get a softer look.

Once you are done stamping with bleach, it is VERY important to clean your stamps thoroughly. The bleach will not harm your stamps if you follow this rule and It may clean up any ink residue that may be stuck in the nooks and crannies. Wash with a soft brush and warm soapy water.

First I stamped flowers repetitively along the bottom edge to create a border.

Next, I stamped some butterflies

It would have been pretty with just bleaching, but I decided to stamp the same flowers in a darker ink, slightly offset. I did the same for the butterflies but used a contrasting stamp. You can't really see it, but I also sprayed some glitter spray over the entire sheet.

Voila, the finished product!

Now, I'm going to get busy and create a layout with my unique patterned paper. I'll show the completed layout in the next post. Until then....Happy Stamping!

Stamping - It's not just for Cards!

A lot of people say they aren't interested in rubber stamping because they don't make cards...they are more into scrapbooking. Boy are they missing out! Stamps can be used for alphabet titles, backgrounds, embellishment accents, journaling and much more! Plus, they are a great investment in that they can be used over and over again.

If you want to break out of the mold and stamp on your pages you will need to know a few things about the products first.

Ink Basics

Stampin' Up!'s revolutionary pads feature a patented, flip-top design that stores the inking surface upside down so it is always moist. The type of ink used depends on the look you want and the material you will be stamping:

Dye - Dye based inks may fade with time, making them less attractive for scrapbook enthusiasts. However, card enthusiasts love our Classic Ink pads because they are fast drying, resist smudging and are permanent. They are great for general craft projects as well.

Pigment - Colors tend to be more vibrant, and ink is a bit thicker than dye-based inks. Our Craft Ink pads contain rich pigment that is ideal for scrapbooking, embossing, and other craft projects, and are the best choice for long-lasting color.

Versamark - Perfect for watermarking which creates a subtle tone-on-tone image. It is also perfect for heat embossing.

Staz On - This is a solvent based ink. It dries by evaporation, not absorption like water-based dye inks. It is perfect for smooth surfaces, such as glass, acrylic, metal and photographs. Clean your stamps immediately with Staz-On solvent cleaner when using this ink.

Other products you may like to have on hand include embossing powders, a brayer, sponge daubers, stamp cleaning solution & scrubber..

Then, of course, you need the stamps!

Our high quality rubber stamps are sold in sets, in both wood and clear mount. The deeply etched images on foam-backed rubber create sharp and clear stamped images, giving a far superior result over materials such as acrylic or foam stamps.

If you are just starting out, consider purchasing sets that will work with many of your scrapbooking projects, such as alphabets, basic shapes, floral, holiday, baby, etc.... These basic images can be used in many different ways on your layouts without being repetitive.

Try these ideas:

* Change the stamped ink color or use Versamark for subtle backgrounds..

* Use basic shapes and different ink colors on white or light colored cardstock to create your own unique patterned paper.

* Try watercolor pencils, markers, chalks, glitter, acrylic paints, or embossing powders.

* Use a portion of a stamp as opposed to the entire image.

* Change the paper or surface, such as patterned paper, fabric, acrylic, vellum, or textured cardstock.

* Add mixed media, such as brads, eyelets, ribbon, tags and buttons.

There is no end to the techniques one can learn with inks and stamps. To get started, try these basic techniques:

Direct to Paper - Images and inks are pressed to paper, either directly on your layout or on a separate piece of paper which is then cut out and mounted on your page. For larger stamps such as background stamps, it is often easier to lay the stamp image side up and tapping the ink pad onto the image. Press the image onto the paper firmly with your palm and don't rock or twist the stamp. Pick the stamp straight up and allow the image to dry. Color the image if desired.

Heat Embossing - This technique gives a raised impression to your stamped image. Rub an embossing buddy or dryer sheet over your paper. Stamp your image with our Craft Ink or Versamark. Place your image over a sheet of plain copy paper or a powder tray. Pour embossing powder over the entire stamped image. Pick up the stamped image and tap it lightly to remove the excess embossing powder. Return the excess powder to the jar. Heat the image with an embossing gun being careful to slowly move the heat gun over the image. To avoid overheating or scorching your paper, constantly move the embossing gun around in a circular motion. You will know it's done when your image begins to change texture, becoming slightly raised..

Shadow Stamping - This technique is done in two steps: stamping the shadow stamp in a light color and re-stamping in a darker ink over that shadow. Shadow stamps are typically a solid rubber shape, such as squares and circles, many with unique edges.

Resist - With this technique, the image is the only area of your paper not colored by ink. Stamp your image on glossy paper using a Versamark pad. Ink a brayer and roll it across the paper and image.

Masking - Masking is done when you want to bring an image to the forefront of a scene. To create a mask, stamp your foreground image on a post-it note and trim, cutting just inside the edge of the image for best results. To use the mask, stamp your image on your cardstock or paper. Place the mask over your image when it dries. Stamp your background layer(s) and allow to dry. Remove the mask to reveal your layered art.

With these products and techniques, you can create beautiful and unique scrapbook layouts. You'll soon realize that inks and stamps are a versatile and artistic way to preserve your memories!

Haitian Disaster Relief

On January 12, 2010 a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti, leaving in its wake devastation so overwhelming that the Haitian people and their leaders can only look for help from the outside to cope. In the past, when terrorists attacked the Twin Towers, when a tsunami struck Indonesia, when a hurricane destroyed New Orleans, and when wildfires ravaged Australia, Stampin′ Up! demonstrators have stepped forward and showed their commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. This time is no different.

From now until February 28, 2010, $2 from every I ♥ Hearts stamp set sold will be donated to the American Red Cross’ Haiti Relief and Development Fund. The Red Cross is already well-established in Haiti, and this money will be used to provide immediate relief and long-term support through supplies, technical assistance and other support to help those in need.

Scrapbook Layouts featuring Autumn Meadows Designer Series Paper and the "Deal of the Week"

I went to a scrapbooking crop this weekend and had a wonderful time. I was able to have creative "me" time....something I have had very little of since our move back home this past summer.

As usual, I put off getting things ready to take to the crop until the very last minute. I found myself running around like a chicken with it's head cut off (don't you love Southern sayings....lol) trying to decide which pictures, papers, embellishments and so on to take with me. I was getting quite frustrated, so I decided to do it a little different this time.

As you will notice, there are no pictures on my layout. I grabbed papers and embellishments that were appropriate for Fall and Thanksgiving and decided to just go with my creative flow. I didn't take a single picture with me to the crop.

This is the first time I have created a layout without choosing the pictures first, and I must say that I found it very liberating doing it this way. It gave me free reign to just be creative and not worry whether the pictures coordinate with everything.

I am sure once my Thanksgiving/Fall pictures are developed after the holidays that everything will match just fine.

The papers I used are from the Autumn Meadows Designer Series paper (Item #116769, $9.95) which can be found on page 13 of the Holiday Mini.

I absolutely love, love, love the colors in this paper!!

Okay, so here's a challenge for you....try creating a layout without pictures. I bet you will find that it gives you creative freedom too.

The beautiful Autumn Splendor stamp set (Item #116503, $20.95) coordinates so well with this paper. I did not use this stamp set on my layouts because I don't own it yet, but it is definitely on my wish list. Once I have it I will be using it on the additional Fall pages I will be making. I still have tons of paper left over after doing 4 layouts!

I came across an organization called Operation Write Home today on Facebook. After reading their blog, I have been inspired to make cards for this worthy cause.

Here is their mission statement:

To support our nation's armed forces by sending blank greeting cards to write home on, as well as cards of gratitude to encourage them.

I need to iron out the details, but I plan on holding an event before the end of this month to make cards for the troops in time for the holidays. Do you have relatives or friends that are hard to buy gifts for? I love getting scrapping goodies for Christmas, but it is very hard for my family to know what I need or want. My husband asks me for a wish list every year so he won't have to worry about buying something for me that I already own.

In the past I would visit my favorite online stores and create a wish list on each and every site, then I would print them all out and give them to my husband. A very time consuming process, as you can imagine.

Today I found a website called wishlistr where you can create a master wish list and add items from all over the internet. How great is that?

There are 3 fields to fill out for each item you add to your wish list.... Title, link, and additional info. The additional info field is a great place to add the price, item #, color, size, etc... If the item you want cannot be purchased online, you can also let them know where it can be located in this field.

As you know, Stampin' Up products are now available for purchase through my website. Currently, there is no wish list option in our online ordering system, so this would be a simple way for you to include those "must have" Stampin' Up! items to your wish list. Just add the name of the stamp set in the title field, my website address in the link field, and the item number and price in the additional info field.

Online Ordering Launched Today

As of today, online ordering is now available through my Stampin' Up! website!! Located in the top right-hand corner of every page is a "Shop Now" button where you can browse through Stampin' Up!s current products and place your order.

Some things for you to know:

** For a short time, during the roll-out period of this new service, online ordering is only available through Demonstrator websites. So, don't forget to bookmark my website while you are there!

** After the initial roll-out period, there will be three options available for placing online orders.

1. If a customer orders through a demonstrator's website, they will enjoy normal catalog prices as well as minimum shipping prices. They can also earn Stampin' Rewards (Hostess Benefits) on orders over $150.

2. If a customer places an order directly through Stampin Up!s website and chooses a demonstrator in their area, they will pay the same catalog prices. However, they will pay a more expensive minimum shipping fee and will not be eligible for Stampin' Rewards.

3. Finally, if a customer places an order on Stampin' Up!s website and chooses to have no contact with a demonstrator, they will pay a premium price on the catalog merchandise (about 10 percent higher), higher minimum shipping fees, and will not receive Stampin' Rewards.

Normally, as an extra incentive, I offer a 10% discount to all new customers who have never placed an order with me. However, if you place your order online, the new process does not have a way for me to include this discount. Therefore, if you would like to receive the 10% discount on your initial order, I will have to place your order the old way...on a Customer order form. Please contact me for details.

While online ordering is a wonderful option, it cannot replace the hands-on service that I will continue to give to you. I will always be available to answer your questions, teach you new techniques and help you in any way that you need.

I thought I would share more pictures of storage solutions that I use in my craft room.

This is a large cork bulletin board that I use to display my collection of shape scissors and hand-held punches.

I was storing them in a container before and I found that I didn't use them that much. I like to see my craft supplies so I don't tend to forget what I have.

I found these crates at a small local home decor store and I had no idea at the time what I was going to do with them, but I really liked them.

I finally decided to use them to hold my acrylic paints. I smeared a little bit of paint on each lid so I could see the color without having to pull out the bottle.

Good use for a pants hanger, huh? I can't take credit for this idea though. I saw this idea in an issue of Stampin' Success (a SU demo magazine). They only used it for wheels in their example.

If you want to use one of these to store your wheels, be sure to remove the black plastic material that is encasing each bar or your wheels won't fit. I used a knife to scrape it off, and it came off very easily.

I think I will be finding a different storage solution for my ribbons though, and just use this specifically for my wheels.

I don't know exactly what this thing is called, but you can find them in the hardware section at Walmart. Do-it-yourselfer's use them to store nuts, bolts, screws, etc..

I thought it was perfect for small embellishments like brads, eyelets, buttons, etc. I did have these stored in a bead holder, but again, I didn't like it because they were out of sight and out of mind.

These can be hung on a wall or stacked.

This is another one with larger drawers to hold larger embellishments.

I didn't realize when I took this picture that some of my labels have fallen off. How funny, I will have to make some more :)

Punch Display Board

My youngest daughter and I made this Punch display this weekend. I have seen several examples online of people using towel bars to display their punches and I have always wanted to do the same thing in my craft room. However, I live in a rental so I had to come up with an alternative where I wouldn't have several holes drilled into the wall.

Cost to make this display was minimal....

Plywood and 1x4's - $1.50 (bought from the scrap bin at Home Depot)
